The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the answers. However, our close working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level:
  • Increased rider knowledge
  • Increased rider safety skills
  • Prevention of accidents
  • Reduced injuries
  • Reduced fatalities
  • Improved general public image of motorcyclists
  • Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding

The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible.

LEVEL FOUR INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Louisiana District – July 2008
The purpose of the level four incentive program
1. Get more GWRRA members to sign up in level 1.
2. Get more members to advance in program from the current level they are
in to the next level.
3. Get more members to stay current and wear proper riding gear once they
achieve level 4.

To qualify for our incentive program:
1. Your name is submitted by your home chapter educator at the end of each calendar year. (December 31)
2. Your name can only be submitted by one chapter educator.
3. You must attend at least 7 chapter gatherings (meetings) of your home Louisiana chapter.
4. If your name is selected to win one of our gifts, the above must be verified by district director.

Only one winner per category.

Category 1 - Level 1 Incentive.

Sign up to become a level 1 in the current calendar year.
(Example – signed up in 2008 you qualify, but if you signed up in 2007 and are still a level 1 you do not qualify for the drawing for the gift)

Gift - $50.00 value.

Category 2 - Levels 2, 3, and 4 with less than 6 months as a level 4 incentive.

Have advanced in the levels program during the current calendar year.
Once becoming a level 4 you must wear proper riding gear.

Gift – Set of tires. $300.00 value-installation NOT included.

Category 3 - Level 4 Incentive

Be a current level 4 at the end of the calendar year and have been a level 4 since July 1 of the current year. Current means to have taken a first aid course and have a current first aid card. Riders having taken an approved riders course in the required time period. Co-Riders having taken an approved classroom course in the required time. There can be a lapse period of 5 months in staying current for first aid/riding, or classroom courses for those level 4’s that were current at the beginning of the year but had their first aid, riding or classroom expire and due to the lack of courses being available on a limited basis. (Example- A member first aid expires in July but he waits until an October rally to take their first aid course.) Anyone who has achieved level 4 status in the current calendar year must have been a level 4 for 6 months to qualify for category 3. (Even thought they would not quality to win a set of tires in category 3, they would still qualify to win a set of tires in category 2). There are some level 4 members who do not keep there course requirements current once they expire. These level 4 members will not qualify for the drawing.

Wear proper riding gear at all times. This means you have been wearing proper riding gear since January 1 of the current year. It also means you wear proper riding to all GW functions as well your personal riding time. The only exception to this rule is during a sanctioned slow riding parade. (Example – Mardi Gras parades that Chapter K participates in.)

Note: It is impossible for our chapter educators to be aware of what GWRRA members wear each time a member rides his bike. It is very important to our program that the winner of category 3 wear their riding gear at all times. We want someone to win the set of tires who deserves them, so if you do not wear proper riding gear all the time, please do not let your chapter educator submit your name in this program. If it is determined at some later time that the winner does not wear proper riding gear, that person will be expected to repay Riders Ed for the cost of the tires.

Gift – Set of tires. $300.00 value-installation NOT included. (maybe more gifts for 2009 riding season)

Proper riding gear.

1. DOT approved helmet
2. Long pants
3. Long sleeve shirt
4. Full finger gloves
5. Eye protection
6. Ankle high boots

A member can only qualify for only one of the above three incentives.

Only one winner for each of the three categories.

All the names of those who qualify will be put in a hopper and selected at wingless weekend. You do not have to be present to win.

District Rider Education personnel (Mike/Pam Jastram and Brian/Kim Bertholot) will have final say if there becomes any issue regarding this program.

Good Times for Rider Education in Louisiana!

We have the following announcements to make.

1. Our first Safety Weekend will be held March 6 and 7 2009.

Riding classes * 1st aid course * Safety Seminars
We want your input of what you want taught. Express your suggestions to your chapter educator.
Exact location to be announced later.

2. Parking lot practice facilitator program. While others were visiting the Biltmore Home in Asheville, I was receiving instructions on GWRRA’s PLP Facilitator
Program. Our Louisiana chapter educators will be receiving instructions on how
to conduct this program and by fall should be able to hold a PLP for your chapter.

3. Level’s program. To help generate more interest in our level program, a key to safe driving and good safety habits, I have put together an incentive programwhere some of our GW members will be eligible to win gift certificates or even a set of tires for their bike. Please visit our Louisiana District Website at
www.gwrra-la.org/ for more information.

4. 1st aid Courses. I have posted a contact where you can receive either your initial certification or refresher course. Only a four hour course for either. Be sure to work with your chapter educator for scheduling and be sure to show up when you agree to do so. This instructor works in the Slidell area but I will be locating others throughout the state. Please help me with anyone you know who teaches 1st aid in other cities.

5. Larry Penepent (Arkansas) has received training at Wing Ding to teach GW’s ARC (Advanced Riding Course) course. Looks like we in Louisiana will be able to take the ARC course at a rally near you or perhaps at our Safety Weekend this spring. They tell me that the ARC is a lot more challenging than the state’s ERC. Harry Dollarhide also received training at Wing Ding to teach instructors the ARC so we can anticipate more ARC instructors in our area in the near future.

Buster Henriksom, our Chapter Educator for Chapter C, is scheduled for colon surgery at MD Anderson (Houston) on July 21. Buster was diagnosed with colon cancer several months ago. Please keep Buster in your prayers. Call him or his wife to check on him.
